Audi A3 E-tron plug-in hybrid concept
Based on the current RS3 Sportback, the A3 E-tron packs a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 211 hp and an electric motor rated at 27 hp. The powertrain's combined output can push the car from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 144 mph. Power flows through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.The lithium-ion battery pack is stored behind the rear seats. At 12 kilowatt-hours, it holds enough juice to power the A3 E-tron up to 34 miles without the help of the turbo four.
The four-seater uses MacPherson struts up front and a four-link suspension in the rear. Audi's Drive Select system lets the driver choose from five modes, tailoring the response of the suspension, steering, transmission and throttle.
Inside, Audi swaps the tachometer for a power meter, which shows total system output on a scale of 0 to 100 percent. The meter also shows where the power is coming from--the engine or the battery pack.
